Kunle Afolayan’s ‘Anikulapo’ Scores Highest Nominations As AMVCA Returns For 9th Edition

Award-winning Nigerian filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan bags the highest nominations at the ninth Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) with his 2022 film Anikulapo. The epic film bagged 16 nominations from the 33 categories at this year’s edition.

Anikulapo tells the story of Saro (Kunle Remi) whose background and greed pushes him into a complicated future as he struggles between staying true to his craft in his new found home and his dangerous relationship with the king’s youngest wife (Bimbo Ademoye).

In two weeks of the film’s release, Anikulapo had created so much buzz on both Netflix and in the cinemas that it topped the hourly views for the week on Netflix’s Non-English global category with 8.7 million hours while grossing N12 million at the box office at the same time.

For the 2023 AMVCAs, the film was nominated in the following categories: Best Overall Movie, Best Soundtrack (Kent Edunjobi), Best Indigenous Language – Yoruba, Best Movie West Africa, Best Writer In A Movie Or TV Series (Sola Dada), Best Actress In A Drama Movie/TV Series (Bimbo Ademoye), Best Costume Designer In A Drama/TV Series (Toyin Ogundeji), Best Sound Editor (Anu Afolayan), Best Picture Editor (Temitope Folarin), Best Makeup Artist In A Movie or TV Series (Hakeem Effects Onilogbo), Best Lightning Engineer In A Movie Or TV Series (Lanre Omofaiye), Best Cinematographer (Jonathan Kovel), Best Supporting Actor in a Movie or TV Series (Yinka Quadri, Taiwo Hassan), and Best Supporting Actress (Sola Sobowale).

Since breaking into the film industry, he has produced a range of highly acclaimed films, including The Figurine, Citation, Swallow and more.

In 2015, he had also made history with October 1 as he earned 11 AMVCA nominations and won other reputable awards including three Africa International Film Festival, AFRIFF awards for the film.
