The first auditions for Nigerian Idol season 8 aired on Sunday, April 23, 2023, and we definitely are in for a ride this season. With contestants ranging from those who possess awestruck-ing vocals to those with no skills, the Nigerian Idol judges – Simi, D’banj, and Obi Asika – have to vet them all.

Like D’banj’s famous mantra ‘I must greet you specially’, the first contestant of the first audition night gave us a special treat as the set of twins – Mina and Mura – performed Coldplay’s Fix You and Cynthia Evro’s Stand Up respectively. This earns them the first set of golden tickets for the night.

Their performance is followed by Abraham, who took us to church with his performance and snagged three yeses from the judges.

Simi particularly falls in love with Lily’s tone as she sings Whitney Houston’s ‘Saving All My Love For You’, and the same goes for the six other contestants that came afterward.

However, it’s not Nigerian Idol if there are no funny moments. Patrick’s rendition of his original song, Obimo sends the judges through a fit of laughter, and Angel’s reckless decision to sing Wizkid’s Reckless warrants advice from Simi that would keep it out of competition for a while.

While Sunday might have let nerves get in his way, D’banj and Obi Asika saw past it and decided to give him another chance, but Frank was not so lucky. Frank, however, got a selfie price from D’banj.

Watch out for the new episodes of Nigerian Idol every Sunday on the Africa Magic Channels on DStv and GOtv.
