Weeks of audition and years of preparedness for the spotlight were put to the test on the Nigerian Idol stage at the first live show on Sunday, May 28, 2023, and the top 10, despite their preparation, seemed to fall short of expectations.
The contestants seemed very tense and put on a show in their best capacity as they belt out the notes but barely paid attention to pacing themselves and making their performance enjoyable – there were a couple of hits still.
The theme of the night was simple, they were to sing songs from the Divas in the music industry, and Victory Gbakara started the night with his performance of Alicia Key’s Fallin. Despite a few off times, the singer managed to engage his audience and have a good time on stage but was the performance mind blowing? That question we would leave to the voters.
His performance was followed by Savy Henry’s performance of John Legend’s You and I, and I dare say he was too comfortable. The viewers know Henry to be the serenader, but there seems to be something missing, but his performance was not a bad performance.
Reigny, however, left it all on the stage as she sang her heart out as she embodied Keyshia Cole’s ‘Sent From Heaven’. Her vocals were stable, she engaged with the audience, and she seemed to be enjoying her time on stage. Chisom did the same with his performance of Usher’s ‘U Got It Bad’, from day one we were already getting performer Chisom, and we are not complaining.
In the same vein, although it seemed like she struggled a bit, Goodness tries to give an outstanding performance of Beyonce’s Halo, and she manages to pull it off with her vocal dexterity despite some hiccups.
However, there were outstanding acts from the night, and on top of that list is Abraham, as he surprised everyone with his captivating performance of Michael Bolton’s ‘Go The Distance.’ It was giving little mermaid, and we were all here for it.
Still, on outstanding performances of the night, Precious Mac like Abraham shows us that she is a performer as she performs Alicia Key’s ‘No One.’ Although it seemed like her vocals were not strong enough, she still gave us a show. Ose Daniel was the opposite as he showed us that he is a vocal powerhouse, but he fell short in managing his stage.
Quest, on the other hand, started right, but she missed the mark as she got into the killing part of Celine Dion’s ‘It’s All Coming Back To Me Now’. Her song choice seemed to have not worked in her favour. The same happened to Constance.
However, for Constance, it was the age appropriateness of her songs. During the last stage of Theatre Week, the now 18-year-old singer sang Ariana Grande’s ‘POV’, which is a very sexual song, and for the live shows, she sang Adele’s love song ‘All I Want.’ Although the latter song seemed age-appropriate it still did not sit right with the judges, especially D’banj, who seemed to have felt uncomfortable with her singing such songs.
Although we might have a different opinion on who our best performer of the night was, in a Twitter poll conducted by Netng 49% of the 106 voters chose Precious Mac as their best performer of the night, followed by Abraham who amassed 28% of the total votes.
Whichever way it is, the first live shows have left viewers with questions about what these rising stars will be bringing to the show next week, and we hope it’s mind blowing.
