Superstar Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain will depart the team this summer when his contract ends.
The Argentine World Cup champion had a “agreement in principle” to remain another year, but neither the club nor the player are willing to sign the contract right now.
Due to financial difficulties, Messi is not certain that the club can compete at the highest level of European soccer, and the French champions want to concentrate on the development of new players.
Messi still feels he can compete at the pinnacle of European football for another season, and he is eyeing the opportunity to win a fifth Champions League championship, but his options are becoming more and more limited as a move to Barcelona appears to be out of the question.
The 35-year-old has made 71 appearances for the French team, contributing to 31 goals and 34 assists while also winning the championship in 2022.
Due to his unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, the 35-year-old was given a two-week suspension by PSG.
Barcelona and Messi would like to bring the attacker back to the Nou Camp, but a transfer back “home” seems more doubtful as the La Liga leaders struggle financially.
With five games remaining and a five-point lead over Troyes and Ajaccio, PSG will be without him as they attempt to win their ninth league championship in 11 years.
Messi, who scored 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barcelona, left the Nou Camp in 2021 due to the club’s financial troubles.
