Kent Edunjobi Wins First AMVCA For ‘Anikulapo’ Soundtrack

Kehinde ‘Kent Edunjobi’ Hassan, the folk music star behind the soundtracks of some of Kunle Afolayan’s movies, on Saturday, May 20, 2023, won the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) 2023 Best Soundtrack for the soundtrack of ‘Anikulapo‘. This is the first time he will be getting an AMVCA nomination and also winning the award.

Kent Edunjobi, who also leads the Apex Choir of the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), International Headquarters in Ketu, Lagos, has been enjoying rave reviews since the song ‘Ebenezeri’ (Ebenezer) by the Apex Choir went viral on the internet. Interest in ‘Ebenezeri’ has picked up in recent weeks with prestigious acclaim from some of Nigeria’s most prominent music producers like ID Cabasa, Cobhams, Emma Oh Ma God and Nollywood actress Funke Akindele, among others. The song’s success has also attracted serious attention to Kent Edunjobi as more Nigerians are now beginning to appreciate his talent more than ever.

TikTok and Instagram users have also latched onto the song to create viral clips that have increased the popularity of the song.

In his acceptance speech, Kent Edunjobi, who was accompanied by his wife, described the award as his ‘Ebenezeri’ (Ebenezer) and thanked his wife, family, friends and the CCC for their support.

The AMVCA-winning blockbuster track beat soundtracks of other movies like L.I.F.E by Abiola Olayinka and Habeeb Adebayo, King of Thieves (Agesinkole) by Adam Songbird and Tolu Obanro, Gbas Gbos (Battle on Buka Street) by Tolu Obanro and Adam Songbird, Jaysynths and Hotkid – Shanty Town, Joel Christian Goffin – Black Mail, Q Rodney Abia, Angelo Anosike and Kayode Kasum – Obara’ M.

The award comes two years after his soundtrack for Citation won the 2021 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) for Achievement in Soundtrack.

The folk song with deep Yoruba lyrics and solemn tempo captivated audiences who have been using the sound to create social media posts.

Kent Edunjobi has been working with Kunle Afolayan Productions (KAP Records) since 2016 and is the brain behind the soundtracks of Afolayan’s movies like Roti, Citation, A Naija Christmas, Swallow, among others.

In 2022, the Computer Science Statistics graduate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, also released a full album based on the movie ‘Anikulapo’ on all streaming platforms.
