A man who was stabbed to death on a suburban road in Victoria's east was walking home after celebrating his wife's birthday.

Clint Allen, 38, was murdered as he walked home in Sale, Gippsland, two and a half hours east of Melbourne.

Police were called to the street outside the Criterion Hotel, near the intersection of York and MacAlister streets about 1am after receiving reports a man had been stabbed after an altercation.

Officers gave Allen first aid until ambulance crews arrived, but he died at the scene.

Police are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the stabbing.

Nobody has been arrested.
