In 2022, if you asked the average Nigerian who the big three artistes are in Nigeria, off the top of their heads, Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy would make the list. For years, they have honed their craft and made huge achievements home and abroad while broadening the horizon and widening the possibilities of what Nigerian artistes can achieve in the international space. Although they paved the way, Rema is owning their path.

When Rema emerged in the music industry in 2019 with his viral single ‘Dumebi’, his refreshing sound sounded the alarm of the coming of a new school king as Nigerians, even without an understanding of his lyrics, grooved to the single. He was like no other. With his somewhat Indie accent, mastery of melody, and unending groove, he produced hit single after hit single, and on different occasions, he made it to Obama’s end-of-the-year playlist. In 2019, Iron Man made the list, and in 2022, Calm Down made the list.

Since his emergence, he has had one great feat or the other, but in 2023 it seems he has officially bloomed as he is breaking records worth years of work and setting the records. Here are some records that Rema has set in 2023.

Highest Peaking Nigerian Song On Billboard Hot 100

The first time a Nigerian song entered the Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 was in 2021 when Wizkid released the remix to his hit single, Essence featuring Tems and Justin Bieber. In a matter of weeks, the song entered the Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 chart, thereby setting a record for the highest-peaking Nigerian song on the chart, peaking at No. 9.

On March 21, 2023, Rema broke this record as his single ‘Calm Down’ featuring Selena Gomez entered the Top 10 Hot 100 chart and stayed there for weeks. Currently, the song has peaked at No. 5, the first for a Nigerian song.

First Nigerian Pop Artiste To Reach No.1 On US Pop Radio

Among his many achievements is becoming the first Nigerian Pop Artiste to reach No. 1 on US Pop Radio with his hit single Calm Down with American singer Selena Gomez, an incredible achievement considering the competition it takes to enter the US radio waves. Fans of the star have been sending their congratulations as one fan said, ‘It’s his time! Bad Boy Remy! Straight out of Benin! Edo to the world1 Stay raving!’

Most Streamed Nigerian Album Of All Time On Spotify

A year after releasing his highly acclaimed album, ‘Rave & Roses’, Rema has released the ultra version with six more songs added to the project that has earned the 22-track album the title of the most streamed Nigerian album of all time on Spotify, amassing over 1 billion streams on its release date on Friday, April 28, 2023.

Calm Down with Selena Gomez accounts for a chunk of its streams, with over 700,000,000 streams, as of Tuesday, May 9, 2023.

Most Streamed Nigerian Music on Youtube

On January 30, Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ took the record of the most streamed Nigerian music on YouTube set by Ckay’s ‘Love Nwantiti ‘remix. The music video directed by fast-rising filmmaker DK has amassed over 435,484,872 YouTube views since its release.
