Two individuals have been detained, according to the Police Command in Anambra State, in connection with the assault on the US Consulate Convoy on Tuesday in the Ogbaru Local Government Area.
Speaking about the situation on Thursday, Mr. Echeng Echeng, the commissioner of police for Anambra State, said that a Joint Security Task Force, made up of police tactical teams and soldiers from the Nigerian Army and Navy, stormed the suspects’ hiding place in the Ogbaru LGA community of Ugwuaneocha.
He claims that when the security personnel arrived, they discovered an empty camp. The Commissioner also revealed that two people of interest were detained and are currently being questioned by police as the camp was being destroyed.
Police preliminary investigations found that seven people were killed in the assault. Of the seven, four were Mobile Police escorts and three were representatives of the US Consulate.
The victims, five male US Embassy employees, and four armed police escorts from Lagos, according to the commissioner during the news conference at the State Police Command headquarters in Amawbia, were there to assess the effects of erosion in Ogbaru. At the time of the attack, they were traveling in a convoy of two vehicles.
Additional investigations are being conducted, according to the police chief, and the results will be released to the public when available.
