From the red and blue sign to the vintage Canadiens merch and Quebec license plates hanging inside, the whole place screams la belle province — even though it's about 13,000 kilometres away.

As for what's on the menu, it's full of wild takes on the classic dish, including a Mexican-style poutine with a fried egg, schnitzel poutine, and even a spicy Thai version. The latest addition is a popular fast-food joint.

One Montreal Burger King is in hot water after being slapped with a $2,000 fine for failing a MAPAQ cleanliness inspection.

The Burger King, located on 55 boulevard Crémazie Ouest, was found to be in violation of sanitation regulations, with inspectors citing issues related to cleanliness. The case dates back to December 2023, but the ruling was only handed out on February 19, 2025, following the usual administrative and legal process.

According to MAPAQ, food establishments must be free of contaminants, pollutants, insects, rodents, and any trace of their excrement — a standard this Burger King failed to meet at the time of inspection.

While we don't know exactly what happened at this particular establishment, when MAPAQ issues fines of this nature, it's usually because of issues like poor upkeep, improper food storage, unsafe cooking practices, or staff not following hygiene rules.

"As soon as an infraction is noted in an establishment, the operator must make the corrections requested by the inspector. If this is not the case, legal measures may be taken as soon as the subsequent verification. The inspectors then carry out a follow-up to ensure that risk control is maintained in the establishment," the ministry's website explains.

Despite the fine, the Burger King branch remains open, meaning it has since taken the necessary steps to comply with health and safety regulations, allowing it to continue operations.

However, it's another reminder to keep an eye on the province's restaurant violation list before grabbing your next meal

Curious about other local spots that were hit with fines?
