In two weeks, it will be summer, and we are all officially on the lookout for the song that would become the Song of the Summer. In 2021, we had ‘Essence’ by Wizkid ft Tems, and in 2022 we had Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last,’ right now Spotify has predicted that Davido’s ‘Unavailable’ and Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ would be the Song of the Summer.
Every year the Song of the Summer songs are picked based on impact, virality, and streams, and considering the numbers that these Nigerian tracks have been doing it only makes sense that they make the list alongside songs like Morgan Wallen’s ‘Last Night,’ ‘What It Is’ by Doechii, ‘Cruel Summer’ by Taylor Swift and many more.
Currently, Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ with Selena Gomez is the highest-peaking Nigerian song on the Billboard Hot 100, amassing over 1.2 billion streams since its release on August 25, 2022.
On the other hand, Davido’s Unavailable has been dominating Tik tok trends with over 1.4 million videos made with sound since it was released on Davido’s ‘Timeless’ album on March 23, 2023. The viral single, which has an equally addictive sound, has had celebrities across the world dancing to it, with Chris Brown recently doing the Tik tok trend with Davido.
Although Billboard crowned Harry Styles ‘As It Was’ the 2022 Song Of The Summer, Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last,’ was the unofficial Song of the Summer, and it earned the single a Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Performance. The year before, ‘Essence’ earned a Grammy nomination for the same category after dominating the airwaves on both international and local platforms.
