There are many battles in the war against substance abuse and different areas from which the problem should be tackled. According to professionals, the causative factors for substance abuse that are most common among Nigerian youths are environmental factors and social pathologies such as the high unemployment rate and psychological stress.
The Psychiatric Association of Nigeria has established through adequate statistical measures 85% of lunatics in the country as a result of substance abuse are between the ages of 18 and 35. This goes to show that psychoactive drugs like marijuana (weed) and alcohol are consumed not just for fun, but as coping mechanisms for anxiety and tension and to enhance calmness. However, research has shown that the long-term effects of the use of such drugs include increased panic and anxiety, cognitive impairment such as trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating, or making decisions that affect their everyday life, and dependency.
So, instead of resorting to drugs in the face of emotional issues, here are a couple of safe and healthy ways out that will help in the preservation of our youths as a country.
Exercise
Exercising stimulates your brain and releases feel-good hormones called endorphins. So, when your emotions are in a state of chaos, you could consider going for a long walk, a run, or even practising some yoga. In the process, of course, you’ll be keeping your body active, fit, and healthy.
Develop a new hobby
Now and then, we get bored and we need a distraction from our regular activities. Sure, drugs can transport you to another place mentally, but developing a new hobby will keep you productive and generate some excitement for you in the process – that’s a win-win. You could try painting or even colouring books, cooking and exploring new recipes, learning how to play a musical instrument or photography, and who knows? Your hobby might just grow into a source of income!
Go outside and mingle
Instead of using psychoactive substances to drown out negative thoughts, stepping out of your space and having lighthearted conversations with people could boost your mood. If you don’t have people around you that you could talk to, it’s okay to make it a phone conversation, as long as you’re comfortable and happy talking to the person.
Watch a lighthearted movie/TV show
Laughter, they say, is the best medicine – or drug, in this case. A good old comedy movie or TV show will have you in good spirits. You could also binge-watch skits from your favourite online comedians.
Talk to someone
Healthy coping mechanisms are good, but at some point, it’s necessary to address whatever is bothering you. Try opening up to a trusted friend, or, if you can afford it, a professional counsellor or a therapist. Getting the weight off your mind will have you feeling lighter and reduce your anxiety and worries to the barest minimum.
