In the early hours of June 9, 2023, Damilola Adeparusi , a 300-level student of the Federal University Oye Ekiti, Ekiti state, set out to break Hilda Baci’s 100-hour Cook-A-Thon record for the longest cooking marathon for an individual.

Adeparusi’s world record attempt is coming exactly a month after Hilda Baci set a new world record of longest cooking hours by an individual in May 2023.

Mixed reactions have since trailed Adeparusi’s attempt to set a new world record in cooking with many claiming it was too early for her to be attempting to break Hilda’s record, while some commend her effort.

Although many Nigerians believe she is setting her record against Hilda’s, it is important to note that Hilda Baci’s record has not been verified by the Guinness World Record, so she is currently not the record holder until her record has been certified to have broken Lata Tondon’s 87 hours, 45 minutes cooking marathon record.

Usually, a person has successfully received a Guinness World Record if they have received a certificate, and it’s already three weeks after Hilda broke the record on Monday, May 15, 2023, and she is yet to receive a certification.

Nigerian dancer and Guinness World Record holder for Longest Dance Party, Kaffy, had revealed that during her time, she waited two weeks for the organisation to confirm that she had indeed broken the record. She added that many people might beat the timelines but do not end up getting verified because of technicalities.

Although there are claims that you can only attempt to break a record until one year after it was set, there are no official statements or records on the Guinness World Records official website that stipulates this;. However, applicants wait up to 12 weeks and a maximum of 16 weeks before their application is approved to break a record.

“The current waiting period for all applications is a maximum of 16 weeks. Our current waiting time for reviewing evidence for attempted records is a maximum of 16 weeks,” The Guinness World Record team stated on their website.

Assuming Adeparusi applied 12 weeks ago, that would put her application date on Friday, February 24, 2023. However, there are cases where applicants pay the priority application fee of $800 (₦‎369,920) to reduce waiting time to five working days as far as the application is deemed urgent.

If all these processes have been followed before Adeparusi attempted to replace Hilda Baci’s 100-hour record with her 120-hour record, then Adeparusi can get the world record holder. If not, she is about to make meals for 120 hours without getting a certification.
