A woman has been hit and killed whilst trying to wave down a driver after her car broke down in Western Australia.

Police said the 26-year-old and another woman were heading north along the Kwinana Freeway when their blue Holden Commodore ran out of petrol before Paganoni Road.

The pair got out to flag down another car when the 26-year-old was struck by a passing red Mitsubishi Outlander.

The woman’s injuries were so severe she was pronounced dead at the scene. The second woman was taken to Rockingham Hospital for observation.

Police investigating the incident are calling on anyone who witnessed the crash or who saw either of the vehicles or the women prior to the collision to come forward.

The tragedy has hit close to home for all road users, with many questioning what they should do if they break down on the freeway.

“If you start noticing that you’re having engine trouble or that something’s not right, I recommend you get off the freeway or highway in the first instance and pull over to a safe place to inspect your vehicle,” Alex Hendrick from Main Roads told 9News.

Experts say if you have to pull over, then stay in your vehicle.

“Getting out onto the freeway is not necessarily the safest thing to do, you’ve got cars passing by at high speed, they might not see you,” Hendrick adds.

Instead, buckle up, and put on your hazard lights and call for help.

“Let people arrive on scene with the correct protection to actually assist you.”
