A father has been charged after allegedly shooting his wife dead and seriously injuring his daughter in Adelaide.

Physiotherapist Vasilius Vergulis, known as "Bill", 51, is accused of an execution-style shooting in broad daylight.

Daniela Vergulis, 22, who graduated in law and psychology just two months ago, is fighting for life at Royal Adelaide Hospital and her mother, Aleksandra, was allegedly murdered in the same confrontation.

The mum recently posted online about how "proud" she was of her daughter.

Witnesses said Daniela and Aleksandra were bringing home groceries on Saturday afternoon but didn't make it past the driveway.

Neighbour Hayley Duff said her mum and 11-month-old daughter saw what happened.

"They had been at the shops and they were in the driveway both holding bags of shopping and he came out of the house," Duff said.

Brave neighbours rushed to help with the alleged gunman still armed and watching on.

Neighbours said the Vergulises had always appeared to be a happy family.

"They seemed like a normal mum and dad living in the street," Tony Wright said.

A four-hour standoff with heavily armed police surrounding the home came to an end at 5pm yesterday.

Elm Road has been cordoned off for a second day as police continue to investigate.

Vergulis has been charged with murder and attempted murder.

He'll front Adelaide Magistrate's Court tomorrow.

South Australia Police said officers found one woman dead and another aged 22 with serious injuries after being called.

"The injured woman was safely extracted and rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where she remains in stable condition," a statement said.

"Patrols set up cordons around the home and surrounding streets while STAR Group officers responded to reports of an armed man who remained inside the home.

"After lengthy negotiations, the man was taken into custody without further incident."
