A former child star who featured in Hollywood blockbusters and Australian TV shows has been charged over the alleged importation of 112 kilograms of methamphetamine.

Jarin Towney, 24, was arrested yesterday at a factory in NSW after police found allegedly illegal cargo.

Police allege the container of commercial machinery was shipped from China to Melbourne, which arrived in the Port of Melbourne on July 5.

It had been collected by a logistics company in Melbourne and taken to the factory in Yagoon yesterday.

Australian Federal Police executed search warrants at the factory and at a home in Surry Hills, where they also located a disused clan lab in the factory and seized equipment suspected to have been used in the manufacture of drugs.

Police said a small amount of drugs was also located at the home.

Towney, who previously appeared in popular TV shows including Underbelly, faced court today, charged with one count of attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, namely methamphetamine.

The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment.

Police expect further charges will be laid at a later date.

AFP Detective Superintendent Anthony Hall said the amount of drugs seized could be broken down into about one million individual hits on the streets.

"Every single one of those hits had the potential to cause death or serious harm, not to mention significant healthcare system costs and devastating impacts on families affected by illicit drug use," he said.

"Methamphetamine is a horrific drug that is highly addictive and has been linked to some of the most heartbreaking crimes across the country. (It's) a serious threat to the Australian community."

Police said the investigation remains ongoing.

According to his IMDb page, Towney also appeared in Australian TV drama Packed to the Rafters and acted in the Hollywood war film Hacksaw Ridge.
