Eight weeks after the emergence of Nigerian Idol Season 8 top 10 contestants, we are now down to two finalists after Precious Mac and Victory Gbakara proved their mettle to the viewing public, fellow contestants and the judges that they are truly deserving of the top spot with their outstanding performances at the live shows on Sunday, July 9, 2023.
The Sunday live shows started as a face-off with three different rounds. The first round was tagged the ‘How It Should Have Been Done’ round. In this round, the contestants got to choose previously performed songs at the Nigerian Idol Season Eight auditions as they were tasked to show the contestants how it should have been performed at the auditions.
Precious Mac started the night out with an exciting and powerful performance of Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep,’ her stage presence, vocal performance, and overall vibe made this her best performance of the night, and the Netng audience agreed as she was crowned the winner of the first round after gathering 56% of the total votes.
However, that does not deter Victory Gbakara from showing up and showing out as he gives his best performance to date with a captivating and charismatic performance of James Brown’s ‘It’s A Man’s World.’ The theatrics was like no other. The performance did not only prove that Victory could pull off any song with his vocals and charisma, but it also set a standard at the live shows.
The songs to be performed in the second round were handpicked by the judges. For Nigerian Idol judge Simi, she had Precious Mac perform Shania Twain’s ‘From This Moment On,’ and we could not help but feel the magic like we did the first time she performed the song. Although this version had more technicalities, Precious made sure to slay it with her vocals.
Victory was not here to play as well, with a song Nigerian Idol judge and music star D’banj felt he would have connected to on a spiritual level, Victory performs Redeemer Lives by Nicole C. Mullen, and the holy spirit might have just come down at the live shows because everyone was swaying and D’banj had his hands in the air as we were all taken to church with his performance. Surprisingly, this performance was better than the first.
The Netng audience crowned Victory the winner of this round as he amassed 55% of the total votes, while Precious Mac got 45% of the total votes. It was a tough round.
In the last round, the contestants were to choose the song they believed they did best leading up to their current live shows. Precious Mac decides to perform a song she didn’t particularly shine with. She performed Mavins ‘Overloading,’ although it was better than the last performance, Victory easily won the round with his performance of Harry Styles’ ‘As It Was.’
His performance led him to be crowned the better performer in that round with 69% of the total votes, while Precious Mac had 31%.
The Nigerian Idol Season Eight finals would be live on Sunday, July 16, 2023. Vote for your favourite contestant.
