Former Nigerian Senator, Shehu Sani, has expressed worry over the detention of Niger President Mohamed Bazoum by members of the Presidential Guard.

Naija News reports that disgruntled members of the presidential guard, on Wednesday, sealed off access to the president’s residence and offices after they were given an ultimatum by the Nigerien Army.

It was gathered that after talk broke down between the army and Bazoum, the guards refused to release the President in an attempted coup.

Reacting to the development in a Twitter post on Wednesday, Sani said the reports of alleged military Coup in Niger Republic is worrisome.

The former lawmaker however questioned the reason democracy is failing in West African region.

He wrote: “The reports of alleged Military Coup in Niger Republic is worrisome. Why is democracy failing in West Africa”
