Residents in Adelaide's north are demanding answers as they claim toxic fumes from a fertiliser factory is making them sick.

Agricultural Organics is believed to be processing liquid organic fertiliser at the Diment Road site without approval.

Residents in Paralowie, Burton and Salisbury Downs have complained about the fumes, which they say has been present for more than a year.

They claim it's starting to affect their health, with some seeking hospital treatment.

Marlene Wittwer said she has locked herself inside her home due to the smell, which she describes as "rancid" and "horrible".

"It's a sickening smell," Wittwer said.

"I'm suffering with asthma, headaches and I mean sometimes severe, sore throat, stinging, sore eyes.

"Long-term effects on health are what I'm scared of."

Adelaide resident Marlene Whittwer said she has locked herself inside her home due to the smell from a fertiliser factory she has described as "rancid" and "horrible".

Residents said the smoke also drifts near Burton Primary School.

"When you've got young families with children, it's wrong, this is wrong," Wittwer said.

Salisbury Council said it has launched legal action against Agricultural Organics, which it believes is responsible for the smell, to try and stop it operating at the site.

"It's a little bit frightening, living so close to it, I'm so sorry to those residents, it must be horrendous for them," Mayor Gillian Aldridge said.

The EPA confirmed it issued the company an order to stop operating at the site last month but the company has lodged an appeal.

"I think it's dangerous, I want it shut down," Wittwer said.

The company was contacted for comment.
