A teenager was wounded in a “random” attack in his Queensland home after an alleged break-in.

The 15-year-old boy was hospitalised with a stab wound to the torso after a man allegedly broke into the Gold Coast unit in Varsity Lakes about 1am armed with a golf club and knife, according to police.

Another man living at the home, Simon Hooper, woke to sounds of the altercation and was able to restrain the alleged intruder.

“Anyone knows when you hear someone screaming out like that there’s a problem,” Hooper said.

“I ran in and got him off the bloke. He was fighting me, it was a fight, I just stayed on him as hard as I could and kept on him on the ground.”

Hooper said the teen had disarmed the man himself before help arrived.

“He dropped that bloke, he disarmed him, he dropped him on his own, and he had him pinned by the time I got in the room.”

The boy’s injuries were not life-threatening and he has since been released from hospital.

Police said he was recovering well.

Police allege 52-year-old Troy Andrew Burns broke into the house through the garage and that he was not known to either party.

“It’s certainly something that was, at this stage, a random attack,” Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Dean Anderson said.

An alleged break-in and attack that left a teen boy wounded has been declared as random by Queensland Police.

Burns has been charged with wounding, entering a dwelling and possession of implements that had been used in relation to particular offences.

He was denied police bail before appearing in court today. He is due to return to court tomorrow for a further hearing.
