Africa’s biggest reality TV show, Big Brother Naija, is a game of strategy and tact, and one of the most common strategies associated with BBNajia is the alliance strategy. The housemates team up in the form of friends, lovers, or even enemies to give each other spotlight and relevance, ultimately extending each other’s stay and getting each other as close as possible to the prize.

At the beginning of the All-Stars season, it seemed as though the housemates jumped on the idea of alliances too quickly. We’ve watched ships sink before even setting sail (Ilebaye and Neo), triangles break abruptly (Cross in the middle of Ilebaye and Cee-C), and people rethink certain friendships (Tolani Baj beginning to dislike Seyi) – and the season is barely five weeks old!

Amidst all the running around, though, some ships and friendships are beginning to grow into something beautiful…or otherwise ominous, perhaps? Time alone will tell.

Here’s a list of this year’s BBNaija iconic duos we’ve seen so far.

Venita and Adekunle a.k.a ‘Adenita’

The Adenita ship is beautiful to see, especially now that Adekunle is unwell and Venita is taking good care of him.

The two appear to be a good match for each other, and, of course, when two ‘crazy’ people come together, they are sure to give us content. We watch them go from fighting each other’s battles to stealing kisses and even settling disputes among relatives already (Adekunle playing the mediator role between Venita and Neo).

It’s great to see that none is outshining the other despite the fact that they both have big personalities. They are both getting highlights individually and together and most importantly, they seem happy.

Some viewers however are saying it’s forced and that the ship won’t last, but if truly it’s just a strategy, it appears to be working well for them.

Doyin and Ilebaye a.k.a ‘The Gen-Z Baddies’

Viewers, and even the housemates, seem to have mixed feelings about Ilebaye’s friendship with Doyin. Kiddwaya mentioned that Doyin was playing the ‘godmother’ role with Ilebaye and the housemates agreed, but it’s not just that. It’s starting to look like Doyin is manipulating Ilebaye.

The altercation Ilebaye had with Cee-C that earned her a double strike was an obvious set-up, and Doyin was part of the housemates deliberately riling Ilebaye up and setting her up to misbehave, knowing she was drunk. Neo, who escorted Ilebaye to the diary session had wondered aloud why “her friend” (referring to Doyin) was not there for her at that time.

Ilebaye also mentioned in her diary session earlier this week that whenever Doyin is upset with her, she starts to remind her that she (Doyin) has always had her back and that she’s a much better friend to her, leaving Ilebaye feeling guilty and thinking of ways to make it up to her.

However, the two are currently going through a rough patch in their friendship. Will Doyin fulfil her promise to herself never to speak with Ilebaye again, or will Ilebaye try to reconcile as she always does? Time will tell!

Soma and Angel

At the beginning of the season, Soma approached Cross and stylishly asked for permission to ‘befriend’ Angel, seeing that he was attracted to her and the two (Angel and Cross) had had a thing in the recent past. Cross had no issues with their union and gave his blessing, but Angel seemed distant from Soma until recently when she was seen comforting him when he had one of his frequent breakdowns. She said, and I quote, ‘I don’t think I’ll win the 120 million, but maybe God brought me here for another reason…to remind you who the (censored) you are…’.

The two are being seen together in the house and talked about a little more often. Could this be the beginning of a great alliance? We’ll find out in due time.

Mercy and Frodd

These two are recognised as the leaders of the Pepper Dem cabal which is composed of Seyi, Venita, and some other housemates from other seasons like Alex, Doyin, Ilebaye, and Angel. For two weeks straight, the winners of the ‘Pardon Me Please’ have come from this gang – Frodd, and then Doyin.

Mercy and Frodd are two of the most influential players in the house, but apart from being a powerful union, they also share a beautiful friendship.
