The decision to have no urinals at the renovated Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) cricket ground in Perth has stirred up controversy among board members.

The $154 million renovation will include a new grandstand and bathroom facilities.

WACA board member Paul Collins says he was “stumped” by the decision to not include urinals in the men’s bathrooms.

“These toilets need to be efficient so that they can be functional and people can get in and out,” he said.

WACA CEO Christina Matthews says the decision was made for both hygiene and inclusivity reasons.

“It gives us great flexibility if we’re having all-female events or all-male events we can easily extend the toilets one way or the other,” she said.

“I do hear there’s a lot of splashing and [it’s] not the most hygienic environment.”

The renovations are expected to be completed by 2025.
