A young fan was left stunned after superstar Sam Kerr handed over her prized jersey following their unforgettable, history-making, win against France.

The Matildas secured a spot in the semi-final for the first time in history after defeating France in a thrilling penalty shootout last night.

Zara, and her family were among the crowd of nearly 50,000 people who packed Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium to watch history unfold.

Kerr stripped off her No. 20 shirt as a gift for the young fan who could barely hold in her excitement following the game.

Zara currently plays as a striker in an under 10s girls team a club in Salisbury near Brisbane.

"I asked if I could have (her) jersey. We were like screaming 'please can I have your jersey'. She gave it to me. I said, 'thank you," she told Weekend Today.

"I was very happy. It means a lot.

"I would love to (follow in her footsteps)."

Zara's mother, Selma, said the act of kindness was "priceless".

"I was surprised that she got it. I'm so happy for her because she is a little player," she said.

"It just means a lot to her and to get it out of everyone and to be the luckiest girl.

"Thank you, Sam, and girl power. That's what it is."

Kerr started the match on the bench before making taking the field in the 55th minute.

She has been recovering from a calf injury. 

Australia will take on England in the semi-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup on Wednesday night.
