From the mean streets of Port Harcourt to The Apollo in Harlem, Nigerian singer Timaya is on the verge of history as he joins an exclusive group of Nigerian musicians to perform at the iconic venue. The award-winning singer’s date with history comes on the back of the announcement of his participation as a performer at the maiden ‘Naija To The World’ exhibition on September 16.
A Niger Delta native, the singer will headline ‘Naija To The World – the Niger Delta Experience’ alongside other Nigerian superstars from the oil-rich region. The performers, organisers say, will share previously untold stories of lived experiences in Nigeria’s south-south region with the rest of the world.
Timaya’s rise to stardom as one of the country’s most celebrated stars is characterised by sheer resilience and determination to succeed through hard, honest work. Since daring the odds in his move to Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, to pursue his music career over two decades ago, the singer has grown to become a dominant force on the country’s music scene.
He has released seven successful albums and scored chart-dominating hits including ‘Dem Mama’, ‘I Can’t Kill Myself’, ‘Sweet Us’, and many more. The singer has also won coveted honours such as Best Reggae/Dancehall Album awards for ‘True Story’ and ‘Gratitude’ at the Headies in 2008 and 2022, respectively.
Timaya’s spellbinding stage aura is expected to be a spectacle at The Apollo stage as he weaves through the stories that make the Niger Delta’s culture unique with his music. The singer, with the appearance, will become a member of an elite league of Nigerian musicians including Afrobeat legend Anikulapo-Kuti, Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti, Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy, and Adekunle Gold to take their artistry to the famous arena.
He said, “It’s been an incredibly long journey to get here, and I’m grateful for all the fans who have supported me throughout my career. The Apollo is a place that is synonymous with music royalty and greatness. It’s an honour to join the ranks of such talented Nigerian musicians who have graced this iconic stage before me. I’m excited to give my all and create a memorable experience for everyone in attendance.”
Timaya will also be joined by other Niger Delta natives such as Timi Dakolo, Omawumi, KCee and the pantomimic dance group Seki Dance Drama. According to the organisers, Buckwyld Media Network and BHM, concertgoers can expect thrilling performances that will provide insights into the talent and creativity existing in the region most popular for its oil.
BHM Founder, Ayeni Adekunle said, “We couldn’t be more excited about the lineup of stars that will grace the concert at The Apollo. From the journeys of these creative talents in a peculiar region like the Niger Delta, we believe that the world has a lot more to learn from Nigerian culture beyond just marvelling at the beautiful sound of our music.”
Chief Executive Officer of Buckwyld Media Network, Efe Omorogbe, corroborating Ayeni, said ‘Naija To The World – the Niger Delta Experience’ “will serve as a testament to the incredible reservoir of artistic brilliance present in the Niger Delta region.”
Organisers say ‘Naija To The World’, to be held annually, is an exhibition designed to provide an alternative narrative to ‘the stories out there about Nigeria and Nigerians’.
Burna Boy sold out The Apollo’s 1,538-seat capacity for his ‘African Giant’ concert in 2019. At least 1,500 concertgoers are also expected to witness the first edition of the ‘Naija To The World’ exhibition live at the historic music hall. Over 10 million more will immerse themselves in the historic experience through broadcast partners across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
