A tradesman who fell off the roof of a two-storey home while allegedly being attacked by a promising young NRL player has detailed the moment he leapt between rooftops, allegedly trying to evade swings from a hammer.

Jai King, 39, took the stand at Wollongong Local Court claiming he first saw Dragons five-eighth Junior Amone jumping on the windscreen of his Nissan Navara, which had been parked on the nature strip opposite the Amone family home.

He claims the 21-year-old was shouting “you don’t know who you are f—ing with”.

But lawyers for Amone say that King has misidentified their high-profile client as the man in question, after being shown a photo of the NRL player his cousin came across online days after the alleged incident.

Police allege the St George Illawarra playmaker followed his father, Talatau Amone, up a ladder and onto the roof King and his cousin Dean West were repairing.

King claims Amone Senior told his son to “kill that c—“, sending King leaping 1.5 metres to a neighbouring roof in an apparent attempt to get away.

He says he was pursued by the young man wielding a claw hammer.

“I was going backwards down the pitch of the roof. He had his hammer up kind of like a Cherokee Indian, just coming towards me.”

King fell from the ledge, hitting an air-conditioning unit on his way down.

He was taken to Wollongong Hospital with two broken hands, nerve damage to his right hip, and broken ribs.

After his release from hospital, King’s cousin Dean West presented him with a photo of the NRL star he had found online, the pair claiming that it was the same person that had allegedly attacked King.

“It was like we had seen a ghost,” King said on Friday.

John Korn, barrister for Junior Amone, argued the man in question is not his high-profile client, and that the tradesmen and police “have the wrong person”, taking issue with police not conducting an ID parade.

He claimed King and West came to a view it was Junior Amone “by collusion between themselves”.

He also claimed King yelled at Amone Senior “I’ll send 20 bikies through your house”, alluding to questions raised in court over whether King was a member of the Black Uhlans Outlaw Motorcycle Group at the time.

Both Junior and Talatau Amone have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The decision is expected to be handed down on October 17.
