The Africa Film Academy has announced the list of nominees for the 2023 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) as CJ Obasi-directed movie ‘Mami Wata’ leads with twelve nominations while Kunle Afolayan-directed movie ‘Anikulapo’ follows with nine nominations.

‘Mami Wata,’ a Nigerian black and white fantasy film, was nominated for Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Editing, Best Achievement in Screenplay, NFVCB award for Best Nigerian Film, Best Director, Best Film, Best Achievement in Makeup, Best Achievement in Costume Design, Ousmane Sembene award for Best Film in an African Language, Best Achievement in sound, Best Actress in a supporting role, and Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

Kunle Afolayan’s ‘Anikulapo’ was nominated in categories like the NFVCB Award for Best Nigerian Film, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Film, Best Director, Best Achievement in Make-Up, Best Achievement in Costume Design, and Best Achievement in Production Design.

In 2022, Bolanle Austen Peters’ ‘Man of God’ won eight awards, Kunle Afolayan’s ‘Swallow’ earned two awards, Tope Oshin’s ‘Here Love Lies,’ Tunde Aina’s ‘Underbelly,’ Ogo Okpue’s ‘A Song from the Dark’ and Walter Banger’s ‘Jolly Roger’ went home with one award each.

The AMAA 2023 award themed ‘The Renaissance’ is scheduled for Sunday, October 29, 2023, at The Balmoral event centre.
