Armed fugitive Stanley Turvey has died after he was shot by police during a stand-off in northern Victoria to end a three-day manhunt.

Specialist Operations Group (SOG) police were looking for the 33-year-old at a home in Ardmona, near Shepparton, just after 10.15am after receiving information he was there, police said.

"SOG operatives were confronted by Turvey, who was armed, and subsequently shot him," police said in a statement.

He was given first aid in the driveway of the home before paramedics declared him dead.

"Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the incident with oversight by Professional Standards Command, as per standard procedure," police have said.

"The State Coroner has also been notified."

The incident brings an end to a major search for Turvey over the past three days.

Turvey allegedly first faced off with police on Monday at Katandra West near Shepparton.

Last night officers have swarmed 33-year-old Stanley Turvey's uncle's home at Finley, located in the NSW Riverina region, but did not find the wanted criminal inside.

Police claim he took a gun from inside a home where it is believed he had asked to stay and fired a shot into the air when officers came to arrest him.

"I heard a gunshot and then next minute he was taken off down the road in the car, swerving the coppers," one neighbour said.

It is alleged Turvey fled Katandra West in a stolen Holden, while two officers were injured when their vehicle rolled nearby.

Police said Turvey forced a man to drive him to New South Wales, demanding to be taken to his uncle's house in Finley.

Officers later swarmed the Finley home, located in the NSW Riverina region, but did not find the wanted criminal inside.

It is also alleged Turvey then assaulted a woman at Yarrawonga on Tuesday morning, threatened construction workers at Sacred Heart College and stole a white Hilux.
