In the Wind and Light: Barbara Hirst’s new show opens Friday at Bugera Matheson, a lovely collection of paintings inspired by the woodlands and foothills close to her Alberta home. “When I began these paintings during the winter months,” says Hirst, “I thought about how nature is contained within the city and how snow transforms the landscape, giving even familiar places a disguise or mystique. My winter paintings of treed urban parkland are examples of magical realism in which ordinary places take on a hyperrealist or fantastical appearance.” The reception is 1-4 p.m. Saturday if you’d enjoy meeting this talented acrylic landscape painter in person.
