Vine Olugu is fast becoming an actor to watch out for. However, he’s been in the media spotlight for a while, starting as an intern in media houses like City FM and Spice TV Africa and as an OAP at Babcock University Radio. He then transitioned to becoming one of Nigeria’s most popular male fashion models and fashion influencers. He made a name for himself as a stylish man unafraid to inject vibrant colours into his wardrobe. The actor took over the runway as a model at the Lagos Fashion Week multiple times.
Vine worked with big brands like Essenza, Mikano, Polo Avenue, Skechers and Lacoste and made his first TV appearance out of an advertisement on MTV Base’s Inside Life with ex-BBNaija housemate Erica. Eventually, deciding it was time to take up more space in the media, he auditioned for his first acting role in a TV series. The model earned a place in his first Africa Magic series, Dilemma.
The show was comically known amongst fans as ‘the hottest Nigerian TV series’ during its first run on Africa Magic Showcase in 2021. Vine, who played the role of younger and older Kanan alongside his love interest Kaineto (Treasure Obasi/Joselyn Dumas), was a hit with the audience. Ahead of the series premiere in October 2021, he took to Instagram to gush about how glad he was to finally have the opportunity to show off his acting skills.
He said, “I don’t want to shalaye too much, but shooting 5 days a week for 2 months was nothing as I had ever experienced before. This was a new journey for me and one that I wish to continue. Now I can tell you for free that acting is not easy. Channelling various emotions out of nowhere on demand is quite challenging. So, thank you to everyone on the team who was patient with me and guided me through it all. I’m grateful.”
Spurred by the success of his first outing as an actor, he auditioned yet again for another series and soon had his second appearance, Beyond The Veil, out on a streaming platform. Africa Magic had helped to fan a passion and given him a chance to show off his gift, and he was not going to waste it.
In 2023, he returned to work on another Africa Magic original, Ripples: The New Generation, and has done a fantastic job of portraying his role a little too eerily. The Pisces, born on March 16, plays the role of Alex, a thieving, murdering scammer to a tee alongside Tope Olowoniyan, Alex Usifo, Debby Felix, Ian Wordi and others.
In his new role, he acts as oil mogul Doris Dehinde-Phillips’ sexy boyfriend and a secret scam artist. Once again, fans have taken a liking to him despite hating his character. It proves that he is yet again doing a fantastic job. Both series, his first and third, are airing on Africa Magic. Dilemma airs daily on Africa Magic Urban at 4:30 p.m., while Ripples airs every Wednesday on Africa Magic Showcase at 9 p.m.
Comfortable in dark, shiny skin, bright smile and broad shoulders, Vine Olugu is clearly just starting, and history will note that Africa Magic gave him his first shot as they have done and continued to do for many promising actors. Fans are rooting for him to do more, and we doubt he will fail to deliver as he takes on more brilliant roles.
