Months after revealing that his colleagues at his former record label, Marlian Records, were after his life, Ilerioluwa ‘Mohbad’ Oladimeji Aloba has passed away after getting treatment for an ear infection.
The Netng team reached out to his management to confirm the story, but we are yet to get a response. However, his team released a statement confirming his passing on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.
“Mohbad was Light until the very end, and as we mourn the loss of the brightness he carried, the family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time, Imole is finally at Peace,” they said.
Mohbad, previously known as ‘Too Black’ was one of Nigeria’s fast-rising music stars. His first shot at fame was in 2019 after releasing his song ‘Ronaldo’ as an independent artiste. Although he found success as an independent artiste, he soon joined Marlian Records in 2020, where he went on to make more waves with hit singles like ‘KPK’ with Rexxie, ‘Komanjensun,’ ‘Adura’ and ‘Imole.’
Everything changed on February 24, 2022, when Mohbad was arrested alongside his label mate Zinoleesky for possessing Molly and Cannabis. Although he was released on bail, the spokesman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Femi Babafemi, revealed that Mohbad and Zinoleesky would be charged to court after investigations.
Following his release, the singer raised alarm over his safety, claiming that members of his record label and his boss, Naira Marley are after his life. Soon, a rift formed between him and his label that led to him terminating his contract with Naira Marley’s Marlian Records on October 26, 2022.
This was after he alleged that he was further physically assaulted at Naira Marley’s Marlian Record House on October 5, 2022, in a bid to discuss the change of his then-manager. However, Naira Marley had claimed on Instagram Live that the artiste had stormed the house intoxicated and self-inflicted injuries as a result.
Soon after, he started releasing music as an independent artiste with hit singles like ‘Peace’, ‘Feel Better,’ and ‘Ask About Me,’ which led to the release of his highly acclaimed EP ‘Blessed.’
Fans have taken to their social media pages to express their shock over the artistes passing. One fan said, ‘Mohbad was always talking about finding his peace, about how he was going through so much and still enjoying himself regardless. Sweet sweet music, you go just dey smile se.’
Another fan said, ‘Today, as I was listening to his music, I was thinking about how he gets a lot of us because of the struggle and he stands as a beacon of hope. I don’t even know how to feel.’
Mohbad is survived by his wife, Omowunmi, and song, Liam Light.
