It was a bad day for Liverpool at Tottenham Hotspur stadium this evening as they suffered a late minute defeat with just nine men, after enjoying 5 wins and one draw in 6 league games.
From the first half of the encounter, Tottenham Hotspur proved to be more determined to win and their push for an early win paid off in the 36th minute when Son Heung-min scored the opener.
Maddison picked out Richarlison’s run down the left and he unselfishly squared it into the middle for Son. Alisson was drawn to the ball, leaving the Spurs captain to tap it into the empty net.
Before then, Liverpool lost Curtis Jones when he was first shown a yellow card for a late tackle on Bissouma. The VAR intervened afterward and the referee upgraded the yellow card to a red card.
Despite playing with a man down, Liverpool were able to bounce back before the first half ended. In the added 4th minute of the first half, Cody Gakpo got the equalizer for Liverpool.
As the struggle for dominance continued in the second half, Diogo Jota was sent off in the 69th minute to make the game tougher for Liverpool. Jota completely missed the ball but clipped Spurs’ player, and just over a minute after picking up his first booking, he got a second, and then a red.
When Liverpool thought they would be able to run away with a draw, Romero spotted Porro’s unmarked run down the right, and the Spaniard fizzed a low cross in early when he saw Robertson closing him down. Matip knew that Skipp was rushing in behind him and stocked out a leg to block it, but inadvertently turned the ball into the back of his own net instead.
Matip’s own goal earned Liverpool their first defeat of the season and Tottenham Hotspur continued with their unbeaten run.
The win has taken Tottenham Hotspur to the second spot with 17 points in 7 games, a point below first-placed Manchester City. Liverpool are now sitting on the 4th spot with 16 points in 7 games.
