Tems has been named Songwriter of the Year at the 2023 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. She was crowned the winner alongside Chris Brown and Doja Cat at the award show held at the LIV Nightclub in Miami Beach on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

She was recognised for her songwriting records on ‘Free Mind,’ Rihanna’s ‘Lift Me Up,’ and Future’s ‘Wait For U.’ Chris Brown was recognised for ‘Baddest.’ ‘Come Through,’ and ‘Under the Influence’ which was co-written with Davido, Kiddominant, and Tiffany McKie. Doja Cat also receives recognition for ‘Get Into It (Yuh),’ ‘Vegas,’ and ‘Woman.’

‘Free Mind,’ a single off her 2020 EP ‘For Broken Ears,’ is currently the most streamed on the project with over 130 million streams worldwide. While Rihanna’s ‘Lift Me Up,’ nominated at the Oscars for the Best Original Soundtrack, has amassed over 300 million streams worldwide. Future’s ‘Wait For U’ earned her a Grammy win.

Since her emergence into the music space in 2018, Tems has owned her path as an R&B artiste and producer. Four years into her career, she earned three Grammy nominations with songwriting credit on Beyonce’s highly acclaimed album ‘Renaissance,’ and she went on to get her first Grammy in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category with a feature on Future and Drake’s single ‘Wait For U.’

The BMI Awards is a tribute to the outstanding contributions of songwriters, producers, and music publishers, spotlighting the 36 most-performed R&B and hip-hop tracks of the past year within BMI’s extensive repertoire of over 20.6 million musical works in the United States.
