The biopic, currently showing in cinemas until Thursday, September 14, 2023, is centred around the life of Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, the women’s activist who created the Abeokuta’s Women’s Union that started the battle against colonial and traditional rulers who were against fairness and justice.

“It represents the values and artistic vision that have guided our company for years. The film will undoubtedly leave a mark on the global film scene, and this submission to Nigeria’s Official Selection Committee for the Academy Awards sets the stage for an exciting journey through the forthcoming global awards season,” Yakubu said.

Bolanle Austen-Peters corroborates his statement as she revealed that the BAP team has dedicated their time towards ensuring that the project adequately represented its unique characters with brilliant storytelling.

“Submitting Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti for the consideration of Nigeria Official Screening Committee (NOSC) towards the 96th Academy Awards next year is a humbling and exhilarating experience. Our team poured heart and soul into this project, and this submission is a testament to their unwavering dedication,” she said.

The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) Chairperson, Stephanie Linus, revealed at the committee’s call for selection that films submitted must first meet the committee’s criteria before submission to the Academy.

“The Academy Awards requires that films submitted must meet other criteria, including accurate, legible English language subtitles, shooting formats, and theatrical releases – details of which are available on the NOSC website,” she disclosed.

If chosen, the biopic would stand a chance at the 96th Oscars, which will take place on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles, United States.
