A task force focused on youth gang violence has made hundreds of arrests and seized dozens of weapons.

Operation Meld has seized 42 weapons and arrested 600 people, compared to 300 arrests made at the same time last year.

The weapons included firearms, knives, machetes and swords used in violent incidents across the city, including a knife brawl in an Adelaide nightclub last year that left two critically injured.

Another knife was taken from a stabbing that killed a 25-year-old in North Terrace on ANZAC day last year.

“We’ve had considerable success with significant numbers of arrests…we’ve prevented deception offences, robbery offences and other forms of violent crime,” SA Police Commander Grant Stevens said.

“These youth gangs tend to get involved in conflict between each other, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t impact other South Australians.”

The task force was established in 2021.
