Former President Muhammadu Buhari has joined other eminent Nigerians in mourning the death of Emeritus Professor and Chairman of the board of the Nigerian Institute of Virology, Umar Shehu.
Naija News reported that Umar died after a brief illness at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, at the age of 92.
In a condolence message released by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, on Monday, Buhari said the deceased epitomized the best spirit of human beings.
The former president said through the many years of Shehu’s medical practice, the deceased saved the lives of many people and served the country meritoriously.
Buhari added that the late Emeritus Professor played a pivotal role in shaping many of the progressive policies in the health sector in the country.
The former Nigerian leader, therefore, sent his condolence to the family, government and people of Borno State and the entire nation over the passing of the elder statesman.
He said: “Through his many years of medical practice, he saved the lives of so many people. He played pivotal roles in shaping many of the progressive policies in the health sector in the country. May Allah bless his soul.”
