Major airlines worldwide have suspended flights to Israel and warned passengers of potential travel disruptions as the security situation in the region worsens. The escalating conflict, particularly between Palestinian militants Hamas and Israel, has prompted three US carriers, along with Air France, Lufthansa, Emirates, and others, to temporarily halt services to Tel Aviv.
Virgin Atlantic has cautioned travellers about cancellations and delays from Heathrow, while British Airways has modified its schedule, altering its daily flights from Heathrow to Tel Aviv to depart in the morning instead of the afternoon. This change is reportedly to avoid crew members having to stay overnight in Israel, indicating the airlines’ concerns about the safety of their staff and passengers.
According to Virgin Atlantic, eight flights between Tel Aviv and London Heathrow have been cancelled from Saturday until the upcoming Wednesday. A spokesperson emphasised, “The safety and security of our customers and our people always come first, and our flying program to Israel remains under constant review.” Similarly, UK budget carrier Wizz Air has cancelled flights to and from Tel Aviv until further notice, while EasyJet suspended flights on Sunday and Monday, with plans to alter its schedule for the rest of the week.
In the United States, major carriers, including United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines, have also suspended direct flights to Israel. United Airlines stated that flights would be paused “until conditions allow them to resume,” and Delta Airlines mentioned that flights “have been cancelled into this week.”
The crisis has not only affected commercial flights but has also led to evacuations. Approximately 300 Polish and Hungarian nationals have been evacuated from the region, and reports suggest that Thailand and Nepal are considering similar moves to ensure the safety of their citizens.
For travellers planning to visit Israel soon, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has advised discussing their options with travel agents or tour operators. If travelling on a package deal, tourists have the choice to defer their travel dates, opt for an alternative destination, or receive a full refund. Independent travellers are encouraged to liaise directly with their airline and accommodation providers to explore available options.
The situation remains fluid, and airlines are continuously monitoring developments. Passengers are urged to stay updated with the latest travel advisories and to follow the guidance provided by airlines and relevant authorities as the conflict unfolds.
