World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso has told prosecutors that Spain’s former FA president kissed her on the lips after the final without her consent.
Jenni Hermoso described the incident as disrespectful as she narrated the story to the prosecutors in person for the first time since the incident happened.
Hermoso lamented the damage the Spanish Football Federation has done to her reputation in a statement she gave at the prosecutors’ office at the beginning of September and was publicized by Spanish media, Telecinco earlier today, October 10.
She claimed that “as an employee of that federation, no one protected me”.
She recalled hugging the former Spanish FA president and telling him: “We’ve done it”. She then says he told her the victory was “thanks to her”, put his hands on her head, and kissed her on the lips, and that she remembers nothing else.
“I didn’t expect it,” she is heard saying. “I didn’t do anything to land myself in that situation… how could I expect it in that scenario of a medal ceremony at a World Cup final?”
Hermoso breaks down in tears as she talks about the pressure she has since faced, to the point where she “had to leave Madrid to avoid that pressure.”
The 33-year-old Hermoso recalled telling her teammates Alexia Putellas and Irene Paredes about the incident in the stadium right away, but she took care to avoid making a scene or attracting attention to herself.
She claims that even before the team left the stadium, representatives from the football federation got in touch with her and asked her to get off the bus while it was moving so she could sign a press release attesting to the fact that the kiss was reciprocal for the benefit of the world’s media.
However, Luis Rubiales has denied coercing and committing any sexual assault against Hermoso even after he resigned as the Spanish FA president due to the kissing scandal.
An investigating judge is currently conducting a preliminary investigation to determine if the accusations should go on trial as more members of the Spanish FA have been included in the National Court’s probe.
