Eight months after Kunle Afolayan revealed plans to commence the production of the coming-of-age film, ‘Ijogbon,’ the film has officially been launched on Netflix on Friday, October 13, 2023.
The film, directed and produced by the award-winning filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, has caught the attention of movie lovers who have become ardent fans of his work with blockbuster films like ‘Anikulapo,’ ‘Swallow,’ ‘October 1’ and more.
Here’s all you need to know about Ijogbon before you see the film.
Ijogbon Centres On A Thrilling Story Of Young Adults
The film written by Tunde Babalola, the scriptwriter behind blockbuster films like ‘Citation,’ ‘October 1’ and ‘Mokalik,’ explores the story of four teenagers as they bear the consequences of their actions after stumbling on a bag of diamonds and concealing it.
According to Kunle Afolayan, the film “shows the universality of human emotions, defined by peculiar cultural backgrounds and beliefs. Furthermore, the film depicts what life is like for teenagers in rural parts, and their aspirations for a better life, even if it means having to Japa (leaving the country).”
Ijogbon Is The Last Film On The Afolayan-Netfilx Deal
In 2021, Kunle Afolayan signed a deal with Netflix, where he was to produce three films centred in Nigeria. The films were to include a historical drama, a folklore fantasy and a character drama.
The deal started with Swallow, a film that tells the story of a secretary who takes up the offer to work as a drug mule in the mid-1980s. It continues with Anikulapo, which tells us the story of Saro and how his greed led him down a path of destruction, and the third film is ‘Ijogbon,’ a character drama.
The Cast
Ijogbon introduces us to a range of new and old Nollywood actors. Actors like Bimbo Manuel, Gabriel Afolayan, Sam Dede, Yemi Solade, Yemi Sodimu, Femi Branch, and Adunni Ade feature in the film. Meanwhile, new Nollywood acts like Dorothy Bachor, and Fawaz of the Ikorodu Bois among others, also bring their flair into the show.
Ijogbon Delves Into Local Folklore
With an estimated run time of 115 minutes, the thriller film finds its root in local folklore to better tell the story. The film was also reportedly shot in a rural location, which could be Kunle Afolayan’s KAP Village, where his last film, Anikulapo, was shot.
