In 2019, when the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) called for the return of the era of community cinemas to boost the distribution of Nollywood movies and curb piracy, many filmmakers applauded the board’s take. Ladun Awobokun, Film0ne Entertainment’s General Manager, revealed that community cinemas can break down the divide between filmmakers and their audience.
She disclosed this at TechCabal’s Moonshot two-day tech conference that was held from Wednesday, October 11 – Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Eko Convention Centre.
Awobokun, while speaking during the fireside chat discussing fixing distribution in Nigeria, revealed that she believes the industry can scale with the number of cinemas that will be built as a result of community cinemas.
“It’s something that I’m working with my team on achieving right now. We have partnered with a tech company, where we’re working on getting screens that are less expensive in smaller communities where there are no cinemas. I’m 100% sure that that is where we scale with the number of cinemas that will come from this initiative,” She said.
Although there are initiatives already in place by certain boards and filmmakers to ramp up the number of community cinemas across the country, not enough has been done for the industry to scale.
Furthermore, she charged filmmakers to listen more to their audience as she opined that filmmakers need to tell stories the audience wants to see rather than telling stories they think will be groundbreaking for their portfolios.
“There’s a divide in film where the filmmakers tell stories they want to tell as opposed to stories the audience wants them to tell. I’m not saying don’t tell the story that you want to tell, but let it be led by the audience,” she said.
The maiden edition of TechCabal’s Moonshot exposed its attendees to issues in the creative industry as a range of issues were discussed at the creative economy sector of the conference.
