As tensions escalate in the Black Sea region, Russia has revealed plans to establish a naval base in the separatist Georgian region of Abkhazia. Aslan Bzhania, the leader of Abkhazia, informed Russian media about the intention to create a “permanent point of deployment” for Russia on the Black Sea coast, emphasising its importance for the defence capacity of both Russia and Abkhazia.
The announcement follows increased attacks by Ukraine on Russia’s Black Sea fleet. Just two weeks ago, Kyiv struck the fleet’s headquarters in Crimea, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. The new naval base in the Ochamchire district of Abkhazia is seen as a strategic move by Russia in response to these heightened tensions. Bzhania, who recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressed support for Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine.
The Kremlin has not officially commented on the alleged deal, but Georgia’s foreign ministry strongly condemned the move. It described the establishment of a naval base in Abkhazia as a “flagrant violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.” Abkhazia, located in the north-western corner of Georgia, has been a contentious region since its war of secession with Georgia in 1992-93. Despite declaring independence in 1999, it has limited international recognition, with Georgia considering it occupied by Russia.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov remained silent on specific ship deployments, directing inquiries to the defence ministry. Recent satellite images revealed the relocation of at least 17 Russian vessels from Sevastopol to Novorossiysk, indicating a shift in Moscow’s naval activities due to the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Moscow’s Black Sea fleet holds significant strategic importance for Russia. The fleet’s ships have been involved in launching missiles at Ukraine, causing extensive damage. Consequently, it has become a prime target for Ukrainian forces. The recent attack on the fleet’s headquarters in Crimea reportedly resulted in the death of 34 Russian officers, escalating tensions in the region further.
As the situation unfolds, international observers closely monitor developments, mindful of the potential repercussions of this new military deployment in Abkhazia amidst the existing geopolitical challenges in the Black Sea region.
