Tributes have poured in for the water polo coach, with her family issuing a statement saying they were "devastated and heartbroken".
"She was vibrant, outgoing, and very much loved by her family and friends. We are tremendously grateful for the support of our community at this difficult time," they wrote.
This morning, her grandmother Barbara Adelt spoke to Ben Fordham on 2GB.
"I've been remembering the day she was born," she said.
"Bright as a button coming out and never stopped since then.
"She had a lot of fun, Lilie, and she was so kind to everybody else."
She said James was "the most loyal person" who was "full of life".
"Some people come into this world, I think they're so special, and they don't stay long. And I think that was my granddaughter," she said.
She joked with Fordham about a young Lilie's temper if she got hungry, and her fondness for "grams' chicken schnitzel".
James was mourned in a candlelight vigil in Sydney's south during the weekend.
"I said to her, 'Look, Lilie, they're all turning out for you," Barbara said.
"She would love that."
Today, St Andrew's Cathedral School will hold a special assembly as students return to the grounds for the first time since her death.
