Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has reacted after the France Army said it would start withdrawing its troops from Niger Republic this week after a falling-out with the post-coup regime.
Naija News learnt that the announcement by the French army follows weeks of tensions between Paris and Niger’s new military rulers, who seized power on July 26.
President Emmanuel Macron, who had sought to make a special ally of Niger, announced on September 24 the withdrawal of 1,400 French troops from the country by the end of the year, complying with a demand by the new regime in Niamey.
Macron said military cooperation with the Niger Republic was over after France’s ambassador to Niamey also returned home from the West African country.
In a post via X, Fani-Kayode described the latest development as a great victory for Niger and Africa, stressing it is also a total defeat and humiliation for France and the European Union (EU).
He wrote: “One down many to go! Thankfully the Frog Army leaves Niger tomorrow. This is a great victory for Niger & Africa & a total defeat & humiliation for France & the EU. The days of neo-colonialism and Western imperialism are fast fading. For Africa, it is a new beginning & a new dawn.”
