Australian politicians are joining a growing group of world leaders condemning the deadly Hamas attack and voicing solidarity with Israel.
Foreign Minister, Senator Penny Wong, led the government's response with a short statement on social media on Saturday evening.
"Australia unequivocally condemns the attacks on Israel by Hamas including indiscriminate rocket fire on cities and civilians," she began on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

"We call for these attacks to stop and recognise Israel's right to defend itself. Australia urges the exercise of restraint & protection of civilian lives."
Meanwhile Opposition Leader, Peter Dutton, also expressed a united view with the government on behalf of the Coalition.
"The Coalition utterly condemns the unprovoked and abhorrent attack by militant Hamas on Israel," he shared on X.
"It is yet another example of a deliberate act of violence intended to inflict maximum harm on innocent civilians. The attack is a provocation. Israel has every right to defend itself in response and to deter future attacks and other acts of aggression, coercion and interference."

European leaders also rushed online with the head of the European Union's executive commission, Ursula von der Leyen, labelling the attack "terrorism in its most despicable form."
She said that "Israel has the right to defend itself against such heinous attacks."
German Chancellor OIaf Scholz said that the militants' rocket fire and the escalating violence "shock us deeply".
He added that "Germany condemns these attacks by Hamas and stands beside Israel".

French President Emmanuel Macron wrote that he "firmly" condemns the "terrorist attacks" against Israel and expressed "my full solidarity with the victims, their families and their loved ones."
Following the hostilities, Netanyahu postponed a trip to the Czech Republic according to a statement from the Czech presidential office.
In the statement Czech President Petr Pavel called the incursion a "deplorable act" that will set back "efforts for a peaceful solution".
"The attack conducted from the Gaza Strip is a deplorable act of terrorism against the State of Israel and the civilian population," he said.
"The rocket attacks and the infiltration of Hamas commandos into Israel will block any efforts for a peaceful solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict for a long time."
Jose Manuel Albares, Spain's acting Foreign Minister, added his voice to those condemning the attack on social media.
"We strongly condemn the very serious terrorist attacks from Gaza against Israel," a post on X said.
"Overwhelmed by this indiscriminate violence. All our solidarity (is) with the victims."
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Italy's government condemns the attacks on Israel "with utmost firmness".
"At risk are the life of people, the security of the region and the resumption of any kind of political process,'' Tajani said in a post on X platform.
Poland's Foreign Minister labelled the attack "baseless aggression and acts of violence".
"I strongly condemn Hamas' ongoing attacks on Israel. This baseless aggression and acts of violence, especially against civilians, are unacceptable. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by these terrible events," Zbigniew Rau wrote on X.
Greek Foreign Ministry also posted on X, saying: "Greece strongly condemns today's launch of heavy rocket attacks from Gaza against Israel. Greece stands with Israel and is deeply concerned by this unacceptable escalation of violence."
Lebanon's Hezbollah said the attack was the only response to Israel's occupation, congratulating Hamas for the operation, saying it had "divine backing and pledges final and comprehensive victory".

The group said the attack is a response to "Israel's crimes" and attacks on holy places and that "the will of the Palestinian people and the rifle of the resistance is the only alternative to face occupation".
Hezbollah said that its military command in Lebanon is following the developments on the ground and is in direct contact with the Palestinian command and they are both "evaluating the situation and the ongoing operation".
"We call upon the government of the Zionist enemy to take lessons from the facts that the Palestinian resistance have implemented on the ground," Hezbollah said.
Similarly Iran appears to support the Palestinian attack on Israel, according to the ISNA news agency.
Advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Rahim Safavi, is quoted as saying: "We congratulate the Palestinian fighters.
"We will stand by the Palestinian fighters until the liberation of Palestine and Jerusalem."
Ukraine's foreign ministry has voiced its support for Israel's "right to defend itself and its people" in a post Saturday on its official channel on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.
The ministry said it "strongly condemns the ongoing terrorist attacks against Israel, including rocket attacks against the civilian population in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv".
Ukraine has been fighting a war against Russia since its neighbour invaded in February 2022.
However, according to Interfax news agency reports, Russia also appeared to condemn the attacks in Israel and say they've been in touch with those involved.
Russia's deputy foreign minister Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said: "it goes without saying that we always call for restraint"
The United States condemned the violence and urged both sides to refrain from retaliating.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his shock at the incident, labelling Hamas "terrorists".

"I am shocked by this morning's attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israeli citizens," he wrote on X.
"Israel has an absolute right to defend itself. We're in contact with Israeli authorities, and British nationals in Israel should follow travel advice."
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan called "for restraint from all parties" at a congress for his ruling AK Party in Ankara.
"They must refrain from aggressive acts," Erdogan he said.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Israel was "at war" and called for a mass mobilization of army reserves after the militant Hamas, rulers of the Gaza Strip, carried out an unprecedented, multi-front attack on Israel.
They launched thousands of rockets at daybreak on Saturday, as dozens of Hamas fighters infiltrated the heavily fortified border in several locations and catching the country off-guard on a major holiday.
Israel says at least 22 people have died and hundreds more have been left wounded.
