A teenage girl whose identity was concealed by the Ogun State Police Command has been reportedly raped after getting herself drunk during a Church anniversary celebration.
It was gathered that the 16-year-old girl was violated by one Gbenga Kolawole, who is now in police custody.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun, Omolola Odutola, said the victim’s mother had reported to the police that her daughter who got drunk during their church’s (name withheld) anniversary celebration on the 6th of November 2023 in Adubi Ogun State was raped.
The police spokesperson quoted the mother to have said that she had taken her daughter to a nearby bar shop and locked her there. Unfortunately for her, the young girl became a victim of Kolawole, a 32-year-old man who had unlawful carnal knowledge of her.
Odutola stated Kolawole was caught in the act by one Sunday Ibrahim of the same address.
“The victim has been taken to Ore Ofe Hospital for medical attention and treatment while the suspect has been arrested for preliminary investigation,” the police spokesperson said.
Marriage Is Not By Force, Get Out While You Are Alive – Police Warns Domestic Violence Victims
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, has advised victims of domestic violence to walk away from their marriages.
Edafe argued that marriage is not a ‘do or die affair’ and urged victims to walk away before losing their lives.
The PPRO stated this on Friday while reacting to an alarm raised by human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu about a pregnant woman being abused by her husband in Warri.
“I received this message, and I wish you help intervene as it’s happening in Warri, Delta State. Good morning, Sir, I’m seven months pregnant and I have been suffering all kinds of abuse by my husband, beats me, locks me out of the house most times, forcefully,” Harrison wrote.
The PPRO replied, “Direct her to the nearest Police station and also advise her that marriage is not by force. She can get out while she is still alive.”
Earlier, Edafe also reacted to the case of a domestic violence victim who went back to her husband after Harrison’s intervention.
“Pls, guys, make me understand. You raised the alarm on social media over domestic violence, and the Police swung into action and arrested the husband. Now she is saying the husband should be left alone; he’s her husband, and she loves him. Please, guys, make me understand. IS MARRIAGE BY FORCE? IS IT A MUST THAT EVERYBODY MUST BE MARRIED? IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO WALK AWAY?” he wrote.
