Former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto has declared his support for the newly elected New Patriotic Party flagbearear.

Addressing delegates at the outdooring ceremony of the new leader, Dr Mahumdu Bawumia, he said he is confident that Dr Bawumia is capable of leading the party to retain power in the 2024 election.

According to him, the party has made history by bringing Dr Bawumia.

“From today, we are going to see a new face. I am very confident that having worked with the Vice President on all the major institutions of the government for 6 years, he will lead us to victory come 2024“…,” he said on Saturday, November 4.

Earlier, the former minister conceded defeat to Dr Mahamadu Bawumia ahead of the official declaration of results.

Afriyie Akoto told JoyNews’ Elton John Brobbey that he has already called the Vice President to congratulate him and assured him of his support to enable the NPP ‘Break the 8’.

“First of all, let me congratulate the Vice President for such an emphatic victory. It means the New Patriotic Party has spoken with a huge voice that we have chosen Dr Bawumia to lead us into the elections next year.

“I have already called him to congratulate him on that, and we will be meeting at the stadium for the official announcement and formalities, but finally we are drawing a line in a very major historic event for the party which is choosing our leader for the coming years.”

While acknowledging the victory of Dr Bawumia, the former Minister noted his disappointment in losing in the polls.

According to him, he had gone into the race with the expectation of winning, nonetheless, he was appreciative of the delegates who cast their vote in his favour.

“…I really appreciate the delegates who stood by me and voted for me, it means that my message went down well with them,” he said on Saturday.

He also entreated all aspirants and party members to work together in unity to defeat the opposition National Democratic Party in 2024.
