Rema has made history again. Five months after the tickets for his O2 Arena concert were up for sale, the award-winning artiste and performer sold out the 20,000-capacity stadium thereby becoming the fifth Nigerian artiste to sell out the stadium and the youngest of them all.
In a career spanning over four years, Rema has successfully ridden the wave of his predecessors and experimented his way to the top with his sounds and unrivalled performance ability – his historic performance at the O2 Arena proves this.
Known for his electrifying performance, brilliant crowd control, vocal stability, impressive dance moves and unrivalled star power, Rema stepped on the O2 Arena stage by 11 pm, and performed two hours of back-to-back hit singles with special appearances from his label mates, Crayon and Ayra Starr, who matched Rema’s energy with their performance of the Mavins All Star single ‘Won Da Mo.’
Although it was Rema’s night, the Celestial Being, Ayra Starr, took the spotlight for a bit as she performed her Grammy-nominated single ‘Rush.’ Her mic was on, the vocals were stable, the runs were appropriate, and the crowd was ecstatic, screaming the lyrics to the Sabi Girl anthem, it’s not a stretch that we think Ayra is on her way to selling out the Arena.
However, it was Rema’s night, and he made sure he owned it. From his electrifying entrance that saw his first major live performance of his latest viral hit single ‘DND,’ which had fans screaming his iconic concert line ‘Rema, we want to party!’ A party indeed it was.
He blended the rock-inspired DND with his rock-inspired verse on Pantera, a single off the Wakanda Forever soundtrack. He moved into his more sensual sounds as he employed the expertise of Indian dancers – a nationality most Nigerians associated his sound with at the beginning of his career – to deliver a stellar performance of his hit single ‘Iron Man.’ It was a night of hit after hit, and he closed the night with a performance of his hit single ‘Calm Down.’
Aside from the stellar transitions between performances and showmanship, we could not help but be enthralled by the concept behind the concert he tagged ‘Ravage Uprising.’ For his opening performance, he wore a mask that bore a semblance to the Benin Bronze. In Rema’s case, the mask was broken, but he was still on his dark horse taking over the world with his sound. He simply blended his heritage with his rockstar image, and it worked for him.
“I must remind you one more time, this is not a Rema concert. I know you’ve all been here when a couple of OG’s came through, when a couple of people came through, but mine is different. It is not a concert. It is a Rema party,” he told the audience.
He delivered this and more. All he asked in return was that the crowd danced. We’re almost at the end of the year, and it’s looking like this is ‘the year of Rema.’ From his hit single ‘Calm Down’ ft Selena Gomez becoming the longest-charting African song ever to selling out Arenas in India and Jerusalem, Rema has simply proven that he is here to stay.
