The driver, a tourist from overseas in his 20s, died.

Police are trying to piece together what caused the driver to lose control.

It's believed the car had swerved to avoid an unknown object.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Helicopter airlifted a man and woman, both in their twenties, to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Three of the patients are now stable in hospital and one has been discharged.

Lorenz Kleinberg from Queensland Ambulance Service said it would appear the vehicle rolled four or five times on the sand.

Kleinberg urged drivers to take care.

"There'll be an empty chair at someone's place this Christmas," Kleinberg said.

"We just ask people to take care when they're up at the beach and think about your actions."

Authorities are trying to contact the victim's family overseas.
