A police officer allegedly shot in a small South Australia town is recovering from surgery while the wider community mourns his colleague.
Brevet Sergeant Michael Hutchinson was called to an isolated rural property in the town of Senior, 15 kilometres north of Bordertown, at about 11.20pm on Thursday after reports a dog had been shot.
Jaydn Stimson, 26, allegedly shot and fatally wounded Hutchinson's colleague Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig, who died at the scene despite the efforts of fellow officers and paramedics to save him.

Stimson was also shot and taken to hospital.
It is understood the 26-year-old's injuries are still considered to be life-threatening.
Hutchinson could be released from hospital as soon as Sunday.
"I've spoken to his wife Debbie and obviously the community here love this family," Police Association president Mark Carroll said.
"The Hutchinson family gives themselves and all of themselves to this community."
A third police officer, Constable Rebekah Cass, attended the property but was not injured.
"We often talk about the physical toll on people but we can't underestimate the mental impact" deputy commissioner Linda Williams said.
The community has continued to pay tribute to Doig who was an active member of the nearby Lucindale community.
"Jason was over here most Thursday nights helping with the barbecue," one cricket club member said.
"He always popped in on a Saturday when he wasn't working.
"When he wasn't involved with the footy club, he was helping as a volunteer lifesaver at the school pool."
The cricket club wore black armbands as a tribute to the police officer.
Major crime officers scoured the isolated property for a second day on Saturday as a part of an investigation into the alleged incident.
