Body found in Sunshine Coast waters treated as suspicious

Police are treating the death of a man pulled from a popular Sunshine Coast waterway as suspicious.

The man was found by a member of the public about 8.15am on November 30 at the Maroochy River near the Talep Bridge.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mick Doogue told reporters today police were unable to confirm his identity.

Divers today began searching the Maroochy River for any evidence that would lead to identifying the man.

He had no obvious injuries on the body and a post-mortem examination found no natural causes of death, according to Doogue.

The body could have entered the water from "as far east" as Petrie Creek or "as far west" as Chambers Island, he said.

"We don't know the timeline of events that occurred prior to the man ending up in the water," Doogue said.

"Investigators believe the body may have been in the water three to five days prior to being discovered."

Doogue described the man as middle-aged with reddish-brown receding hair, 189cm tall and of a large build.

He was discovered wearing a black t-shirt and shorts and elastic, green compression socks on both knees.

"He had no tattoos or identifying descriptive marks on his body however he did have evidence of a surgical operation on his right knee," he said.

Police will continue to treat the death as suspicious until it is determined otherwise.
