A nine-year-old boy battling a life-threatening brain tumour has been left devastated after his Christmas lights were ransacked by vandals.

Ethan, who was diagnosed with Ependymoma, a rare form of cancer, had set up a Pokémon-themed Christmas light display outside his family home on Mayfair Drive in Wodonga, Victoria.

The display featured boards with hand-painted Pokémon characters, which he made with the help of his mother Tiffany.

But when he woke up yesterday morning he was devastated to find a group of teens had destroyed his hard work.

CCTV from the family's home shows one teen tearing down one board and damaging several others at about 2.45am on Wednesday.

"The incident has devastated our little man," his mother told 9news.com.au.

"My care-free little boy who loves life to the fullest requested a Pokémon board as big as he is for our Christmas display this year, which quickly turned into seven boards.

"Throughout the past 12 months, Ethan has endured countless CT scans and MRIs, all of which he faces with a big smile, a thumbs up and saying 'I'm okay' even when he isn't.

"The Pokémon boards gave Ethan a lot of joy along with a lot of locals, and to have them destroyed has broken him."

His mother said the incident was absolutely shattering for the family, knowing that this Christmas could be Ethan's last.

"For a little boy who lives his life three months at a time – that being an MRI and review to an MRI and review – and an unknown amount of time left with us, he still smiles and is a beautiful kid at heart," she said.

"He doesn't understand why someone would do something like this.

Ethan's mother has reported the matter to police and believes the group has targeted other homes in the area.

"I know there are a lot of families who have had their displays ruined. It's very sad to see," she added.

A family friend is now raising funds to help Ethan build a new display before Christmas.

The GoFundMe has so far reached $620 out of its $1000 goal.

"I want to raise funds to help this family create the best Christmas display ever and have the best Christmas ever with their son Ethan and make the most out of this and great memories," family friend Katrina wrote on the fundraising page.
