A firefighter has died after suffering a medical episode while responding to a car fire on the NSW–Victoria border.
The NSW Rural Fire Service confirmed the volunteer's death tonight, as Commissioner Rob Rogers expressed his grief and issued condolences.
"Today, we mourn the devastating loss of another dedicated volunteer who, without hesitation, put himself on the front line to protect others," Rogers said.
"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and firefighting colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.
"We recognise the significant emotional toll a tragedy such as this has on our tight-knit RFS community and we will support his family and fellow brigade members in every way we can."
The RFS said the man was responding to a car fire, which was reported as "out of control" on Perricoota Road, on the banks of the Murray River, about 5.40pm today, when it was "understood he suffered a medical episode".
Fellow firefighters tried to save him until ambulance crews arrived but he was pronounced dead.
The RFS didn't release the firefighter's identity.
